After your initial orthodontic exam, it usually takes two to three weeks to get your braces. Princeton Orthodontics offers both initial examinations and treatments. Your orthodontist will likely give you a few sets of aligners and tell you to wear them for a week or two before switching to the next set. You'll receive additional sets of aligners when you see your orthodontist at your routine appointment.
Your orthodontist or a member of the orthodontist's staff will provide you with information about brushing, flossing, toothpaste, rinses, and other hygiene tools for your teeth, as well as any special instructions on cleaning your aligners. These adjustment appointments allow the dentist to evaluate how the teeth are moving and make the necessary recommendations to achieve the best results. If you think you've broken your orthodontic appliances, be sure to call and schedule an emergency appointment so your dentist can fix it, so your treatment time won't last longer than necessary. The time between consultation and the start of treatment can vary greatly depending on the size and workload of the office and the availability of appointments. When it comes time to remove orthodontic appliances, the orthodontist will use tools to remove the wire and then remove them by slightly bending the bracket and releasing the joint.
The dentist will remove any remaining glue from the joint of the teeth to reveal your new smile. When it comes to the condition of your teeth, the orthodontist will want to make sure that you don't have cavities or active periodontal disease. If you normally take an antibiotic before your dental visits, be sure to tell your orthodontist, who will tell you if premedication is recommended before your appointment to place orthodontic appliances. The assistant will prepare the teeth for the brackets and then the orthodontist will carefully place each bracket on each tooth. Ask your orthodontist how long before your appointment you should put your braces on before your dental appointment. If your orthodontist has suggested that you wear a removable brace, you will be shown how to place it and how to remove it yourself. At the end of the consultation, a member of the team will explain how to brush and floss your teeth with braces, discuss what foods you should avoid (hard, sticky and chewable) so that they don't break, and what to do if you have any difficulty with braces. At this consultation, your dentist will explain all the important information you'll need to care for your orthodontic appliances, such as staying away from food that could break them (you should avoid eating anything hard, crunchy, chewy, or sticky) and how to brush your teeth most effectively with the new braces.
