Curriculum vitae:

Education
Qualifications
Postgraduate experience

I started my general professional training in medicine during house posts at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and senior house officer posts at Wythenshawe and Withington Hospitals in Manchester. I extended my general professional training to include neurology and diabetes care at registrar level at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. My specialist training in cardiology began in 1983 and was completed in 1988. Registrar and senior registrar posts in cardiology provided training opportunities at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Children’s Hospital and St George’s Hospital, London. I was appointed General Physician & Cardiologist to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in 1988, taking up the post in January 1989. I am a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medicine for the University of Sheffield Medical School.

Management experience
Research

My research interests currently include vascular effects of sex hormones, drug therapy for atrial fibrillation, and genetic influences on the development of ischaemic heart disease. I have published over 120 main papers in scientific peer-reviewed journals.

I am an adviser and act as a reviewer to the following journals:

I am an examiner for the University of Sheffield School of Medicine and School of Dentistry, and for the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and its Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

I am an External Clinical Examiner for the University of Manchester and have examined postgraduate research theses for the Universities of London and Aberdeen.

Clinical workload

My clinical work is that of a physician and cardiologist.

Up to August 2003, I was on take for unselected medical emergencies on a 1 in 10 rota. From August 2003, I and my two colleagues have been responsible for the care of all patients admitted with cardiac emergencies to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. This includes the clinical supervision of a 5-bedded Coronary Care Unit and a 16-bedded acute cardiology ward. One week in 12, I spend at the Regional Cardiac Centre (Northern General Hospital) where I am responsible for cardiac emergencies admitted to that hospital and transferred patients from the surrounding District General Hospitals.

I personally see patients in three clinics per week, as well as being responsible for one of the three Rapid Access Chest Pain clinics per week.

With my two colleagues I am responsible for the provision of a full non-invasive cardiological investigative service to the central campus of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

I perform invasive cardiological procedures at the neighbouring Northern General Hospital site (about 100 procedures per year).
