Abstract

Although there has been increased interest and use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) over the last decade, there continues to be significant confusion regarding the benefits and risks of TRT. The fear of risks, particularly promotion of prostate cancer, together with uncertainty regarding true benefits from TRT, have combined to make physicians reluctant to prescribe this treatment for many affected men. This presentation will attempt to clarify those areas where TRT has been shown to be helpful, identify areas of promise, and will review the data regarding the risks of treatment. In particular, the data on prostate cancer fail to support the long-standing belief that higher levels of testosterone increase the risk of prostate cancer. With proper medical monitoring, TRT is a safe and effective treatment for many men with hypogonadism.
